ANC rival factions clash in Eastern Cape

2011-02-14 07:28

An ANC regional council meeting in the Eastern Cape had to be cancelled at the weekend after a fight broke out between rival factions, the Dispatch Online reported today.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Mlungisi Matidane said the meeting had been due to start at 2pm yesterday in Mount Ayliff, but was cancelled after a fight broke out between various faction members at the ANC offices.

“We then heard they [three meeting convenors] were being beaten. We rushed there only to find a vehicle belonging to a councillor had been damaged,” Matidane said.

The meeting at the Alfred Nzo district municipality was cancelled and police were called in to disperse the crowd.

The meeting would have revolved around a decision by the national ANC on the constitution of an interim regional committee for the Alfred Nzo region.

ANC spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane said the group that started the fight was the same that had blocked ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe from addressing them in February.
