ANC snatches Tshwane

2011-05-20 10:56

The ANC has snatched South Africa’s capital city from under the noses of growing opposition support.

The Independent Electoral Commission declared the ruling party the winner in Tshwane at noon today.

The ANC scored 56.19% of the votes and the DA 39.05%.

This is a big jump for the DA who won 31% of votes in Tshwane in the 2006 municipal elections.

The ANC saw a small decline from 57%.

Tshwane was one of the metropolitan municipalities in the DA’s sights, but as in Nelson Mandela Bay, the party fell 10% short of the magical 50% plus one.

Earlier in the day, the ANC was also declared winner in Johannesburg after scoring 58.85% of the vote.

The DA came second with 34.62%.

Both the ANC and the DA are hosting press conferences in Pretoria this afternoon where they will outline their biggest gains.
