ANC to discipline members over election list legal action

2011-03-24 14:23

The ANC will discipline members who have taken legal action for not making it onto the party’s municipal election lists.

ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe said today that party members in the Eastern Cape’s Alfred Nzo and Buffalo City regions were trying to interdict the Independent Electoral Commission from continuing with registration of the party’s candidates.

“We are defending the court actions and will also institute ANC internal disciplinary action after completion of the registration process,” Mantashe said.

“The ANC reiterates its position that all matters concerning the organisation should be resolved internally. We take a dim view of individuals who insist on taking the ANC to court, citing process matters.”

Mantashe said the decision to test the popularity of candidates at community meetings “stemmed from a national conference resolution”.

“We expect all ANC members to respect the resolutions of the organisation.”

Mantashe said in the Western Cape’s Dullah Omar region there was “some degree of dispute”.

“We appeal to all cadres of our movement in the Western Cape to accept decisions taken to ensure that the principles and policies of our organisation are adhered to.”
