ANC to probe candidate list allegations

2011-04-29 07:31

The ANC will launch an investigation into the manipulation of its candidate list for the May 18 local elections. This was revealed by President Jacob Zuma at a press briefing in Johannesburg yesterday.

Zuma said that after the elections the ruling party would remove all imposed candidates and replace them with the ones who were “fraudulently removed”.

“It has become apparent that in some instances and in some isolated areas, the nomination processes were unjustly interfered with and manipulated,” said Zuma.

The ANC is facing a number of countrywide protests over the exclusion of communities’ preferred candidates from the final councillor candidate list.

As a result some ANC supporters and members vowed to stay away from the polls or vote for the opposition.

But Zuma implored them to vote ANC in the upcoming local elections.

“We call on our people to come out in huge numbers and vote for the ANC. We will deal with the individuals who should not be on the list after the elections,” he said.

In addition, the party would even go the route of by-elections.

Zuma said there were no timelines attached to the investigation but it would be done this year.

He said the findings of the probe would determine what action needed to be taken against those found to have manipulated the process.

“I am therefore calling upon all those who were dissatisfied and who have decided to declare themselves as independents in this election to return and campaign for the ANC,” he added.
