ANC versus DA on a small screen near you

2014-03-02 06:00

The ANC and the opposition DA last night came to a small screen near you as they started flighting their TV ads for the elections.

Both parties are using the word “together” in their elections slogans at the end of the advertisements.

The ANC’s is “Together we move South Africa forward” and the DA’s slogan is “Together for change. Together for jobs.”

The only politician featured on the ANC’s advertisement is an image of former president Nelson Mandela on a TV screen.

The advertisement, which was launched by party deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa in Joburg on Friday night, focuses on the progress the country had made since 1994:

The DA is flighting two advertisements, and a party leader is central to each of them.

One of the adverts features party spokesperson and DA Gauteng premier candidate Mmusi Maimane in Dobsonville, Soweto, where he grew up.

Maimane’s campaign takes a shot at President Jacob Zuma’s administration.

He says “when we first voted, we voted ANC” because there was progress under former presidents Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, but now people are struggling to find jobs:

DA leader Helen Zille, who is both the Western Cape premier candidate and the party’s presidential candidate, is featured on the other video where she looks at press clippings with her byline exposing the real reasons for Steve Biko’s death in detention.

She says she grew up fighting apartheid and is now fighting its legacy. The progress made after 1994 is being reversed and “corruption is everywhere”, she says.
