The ANC has welcomed the results of the Tlokwe by-elections after winning all six wards that were contested.

Party candidates retained wards one, four, 11, 12, 13 and 20 of the municipality after voting took place yesterday, Sapa reported.

“Democracy has prevailed. The ANC now holds a majority of 30 seats in the 52 seat council thus restoring order and credibility to the council,” ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said in a statement today.

“Repeated attempts by opportunistic elements to subvert the legitimate will of the people have failed. This resounding victory of the people lays to rest, once and for all, the exploitative political manoeuvrings by desperate forces within the Tlokwe local council. The time for work is now.”

Prior to elections, the ANC urged voters to “ensure that Madiba’s legacy continues”.

The ANC said it was humbled and thanked the people of Tlokwe “for their unwavering support”.

“The ANC calls upon all its deployees to, daily, live up to the confidence our people have shown in them,” the party said.

“The sterling work we had already started must now continue under the government of people, the mission is to create a better life for all – in this quest we shall not fail.”
