ANC policy head Jeff Radebe says that the ANC will step up its act ahead of the 2016 local government elections because it is worried that fewer people are voting for it.

Speaking to journalists at a breakfast briefing in Joburg today in the run-up to the party’s national general council in Gauteng in June, Radebe said: “We have seen a trend of overall decline in support for the ANC, and that worries us.”

He said efforts by the ANC and central government to help municipalities and to address service delivery protests were meant to help stem the decline in support.

He also admitted that recent divisions and troubles within the ANC Youth League and trade federation Cosatu meant that the party’s “ideological leadership” was not at its peak.

However, Radebe said that protesters should help “initiate” delivery rather than destroy infrastructure.

In response to questions on the integrity commission, ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said it was created to stem the erosion in values that the ANC stood for.

He also said that it was necessary for the ANC to deal with allegations of corruption even if those allegations were not correct.

The ANC in the past refused to react to such allegations, and argued that its leaders were innocent until proven guilty.
