ANCYL branch recalls leader

2012-02-22 10:51

The University of Limpopo branch of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has recalled its leader Simon Rammutla as president of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).

“The ANC Youth League has internal democratic processes. The branch made a decision in their meetings and forums,” said the league’s Limpopo spokesperson Che Selane.

“For the matter of the SRC, the branch took that decision. It has the power and right to deploy or recall its leaders or its members,” he said.

He would not “speculate” on the branch’s reasons for recalling Rammutla.

Today, the Sowetan newspaper reported that Rammutla was accused of supporting a group that planned to oust Limpopo youth league secretary Jacob Lebogo.

Lebogo had disbanded the Peter Mokaba branch of the party following disputes on leadership change.

The university branch said it recalled Rammutla for defying the ruling to disband the branch.

“Rammutla belonged to a small group of people who do not recognise the decision taken by the provincial leadership that disbanded the region,” the university’s branch secretary Langu Shivti said.

Rammutla denied that he had been recalled as president of the SRC.

“This is a smear campaign orchestrated by the frustrated Lebogo after realising that he was losing (his) grip in the politics of the province,” he told the newspaper.

“We are saying no amount of threats or intimidation would deter us from reinforcing our campaign to replace Lebogo. We remain resolute on our call for Lebogo’s replacement.”

The Limpopo youth league will hold its elective conference in April.
