ANCYL conference postponed

2010-07-24 15:08

The elective conference of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in the North West, planned for today, has been postponed.

The league secretary general Vuyiswa Tulelo said the conference was postponed to allow the Bojanala regional congress to conclude.

Tulelo said: “Once they are finished, we will be able to go to provincial congress next weekend.”

The provincial conference would elect new leadership.

The provincial executive committee, including its leadership structure in the province, were disbanded by the national leadership in May.

Tulelo said the regional congresses had taken place in preparation for the provincial gathering – except the Bojanala region.

The provincial chapters of the league had been rocked by infighting as candidates aligned to ANCYL president Julius Malema and those aligned to his deputy Andile Lungisa jostle for positions.

The leadership wrangle in the provinces was reportedly a precursor to the race to lead the ANCYL in elections to take place next year.

Malema was reportedly facing fierce competition from Lungisa who recently issued a statement denying his presidential ambitions.

The ANCYL provincial executive committee in the Western Cape had also been disbanded while the provincial executive committee in the Eastern Cape recently won a court bid to be reinstated as the league’s provincial leadership after a number of aborted attempts to hold an elective conference.
