ANCYL members told not to campaign

2013-05-07 08:42

The ANCYL national task team (NTT) has warned members against campaigning to lead the organisation.

“We don’t campaign in the ANC,” African National Congress Youth League NTT co-ordinator Mzwandile Masina told The New Age today.

No one had a right to campaign for the top position. The NTT was not even preparing for the congress to elect new ANCYL leaders, he said.

“They [members] don’t have a right to hold rallies and campaign as it is against the culture of the organisation. The membership can decide who they want to be their leaders.”

Masina could not say whether disciplinary action would be taken against anyone proved to be campaigning.

According to The New Age, senior ANCYL member Lubabalo Molefe and former ANCYL national executive committee (NEC) member Andile Lungisa declared their readiness to lead the organisation earlier this year.

Other potential candidates were reportedly ANC NEC member and former league treasurer general Pule Mabe and Higher Education Deputy Minister Mduduzi Manana.

The ANC’s NEC disbanded the ANCYL’s national leadership in March. ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe announced the 22-member NTT in April.

It is mandated with rebuilding the ANCYL’s structures.

Last month, Mantashe said the ANC’s national working committee had avoided including in the NTT people from the disbanded ANCYL NEC.

Only two former NEC members were on the list, for continuity. Those who had previously campaigned for leadership roles had also been excluded, to allow them to continue lobbying.
