ANCYL’s call for ban on booze ads a move in the right direction

2009-11-25 12:45

When I heard that the ANC Youth League had launched a campaign to

ban alcohol advertising and intensified its call for stopping the sale of

alcohol on Sundays and to have liquor outlets close their tills by 2am; I said

to myself, the ANCYL is on the right track for a change. Not that I entirely

concur with them. I just thank them for re-stimulating the debate. Hopefully

it’s not going to be another all-talk-and-no-action stunt.

I must put it on record that I unconditionally support the complete

ban on alcohol adverts. Advocates for alcohol consumption argue that adverts

don’t promote irresponsible drinking; but until we see adverts that proclaim

that “alcohol has a high potential of destroying your precious life”, then these

ads must be canned.

The ANCYL also proposes that alcohol traders should close shop on

Sunday. Why on Sunday? If it’s because Sunday is a holy day for those going to

places of worship; then what about those who are Seventh Day Adventists? This is

a tricky one; however, let’s continue the discussion with all stakeholders

involved and maybe someone will come up with a way out; or does the reader have

a better idea on this? Please share.

It’s possible that the ANCYL is applying the concept of “today

Sunday, tomorrow the entire week”, I don’t know.

I would like to partially counter the ANCYL’s proposal that alcohol

outlets shut down at 2am by proposing that midnight on weekends should be the

hour to close tills. To add to this, I propose that outlets should close shop at

9pm on weekdays. This will give people enough time to get to their homes with

minimal chances of being victims of crime. During these proposed hours, police

invisibility should be a thing of the past. This will also help curb robberies

of alcohol outlets.

Floyd Shivambu said leaders of the ANCYL will lead by example; I

just want to tell him that some of us will be watching. I really now, honestly,

don’t believe this but Thomas’ method should yield results. A friendly reminder

to all drivers is that drinking and driving kills.
