ANC’s turnaround ‘hypocritical’

2011-04-20 14:27

Claims that the ANC wanted talks about the “shoot the boer” song are “hypocritical”, AfriForum said today.

“At no time in the past did the ANC indicate their willingness to enter into discussions with AfriForum on this issue,” said spokesperson Kallie Kriel.

He said that previous attempts to arrange a meeting with the African National Congress Youth League president, Julius Malema, were rebuffed with “arrogance and threats”.

The Afrikaner interest group has taken Malema to court, contending that his singing of the struggle song Awudubhule iBhunu, or “shoot the boer”, constitutes hate speech.

AfriForum released the statement in reaction to claims in court that the ANC had always wanted to discuss the issue with AfriForum.

“The ANC’s turnaround in court is a hypocritical attempt to present themselves as fair and conciliatory to the court,” Kallie said.

He said that his organisation would not abandon legal proceedings on the basis of “vague promises of talks”.
