ASA financial manager ‘suspended’

2013-07-02 17:53

Athletics South Africa president James Evans has refused to confirm or deny whether financial manager Terrence Magogodela had been suspended.

However, Magogodela confirmed to City Press that the embattled president had served him with a suspension notice on Tuesday, and said he did so without notifying the board.

Evans claimed Magogodela was facing criminal charges. But Magogodela said he was not aware of these.

Said Magogodela: “He (Evans) is the only one who knows about them. He has not come to me and no police have come to me and this was never discussed by the board.

“I’m the one who exposed him and now he is going all out to tarnish my image and now he wants to embarrass me. Fortunately, board members are distancing themselves from the decision he took.”

Said Evans: “I have sent the board an email but I cannot comment any further as it is an internal matter.”

Magogodela said his suspension was an abuse of power, adding it was not the first time Evans had suspended an ASA employee without consultation.

“I don’t know why he has suspended me and he did not explain why. The board members should know everything and none of the board members are aware,” Magogodela said.

“He’s done this before but the case was overturned at the high court. He is abusing his power.”

A board member who did not want to be named said he was notified of the suspension by Magogodela and that he had not seen the letter.

He, however, said the charges against Magogodela was old news.

“Evans has sent the board emails on a whole lot of issues. I haven’t read my emails today but this issue has not been discussed at board level,” the board member said.

“Maybe it could be in the email but it has not been decided at board level yet.”

Another board member, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was not aware of the suspension.
