AU has done the right thing – Zuma

2012-07-16 07:17

The AU has “done the right thing,” President Jacob Zuma said as he stepped out of the conference centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was elected as African Union (AU) Commission chairperson.

Zuma said he believed her victory last night empowered women as Dlamini-Zuma was the first woman to hold the powerful position.

International Affairs and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said Dlamini-Zuma would make sure resolutions are put into action.

“What should change [with her election] ... is that there will be more accountability, there will be more
fast-tracking of implementations of decisions taken by the heads of state,” Nkoana-Mashabane told SAfm today.

“That means, spend more time on implementation of our resolutions instead of just creating more and more [resolutions].”

Dlamini-Zuma would, through the AU, “strengthen early warning systems, strengthen democracy and rule of law, and unity”, Nkoana-Mashabane said.

Dlamini-Zuma beat the incumbent, Jean Ping of Gabon, in a closely-fought election over several rounds of voting.
