Aaron Mokoena faces the axe

2013-06-04 11:11

Former South Africa captain Aaron Mokoena could be heading for the exit at Bidvest Wits, with the veteran defender set to miss out on a new contract offer.

According to the Football411 website, having returned home ahead of the 2012/13 campaign after several seasons abroad with English clubs Blackburn and Portsmouth, Mokoena was expected to provide some much-needed steel at the back for the Students.

But after a reasonably solid start to his PSL comeback, the 32-year-old fell victim to numerous injury problems and finished this past season with just 14 appearances under his belt.

With former SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt having taken charge of the Clever Boys as of last week, “The Axe” is believed to be considered surplus to requirements for next term as the Braampark outfit look to build on a fourth-place finish in the recently concluded Premiership campaign.
