Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has been admitted to Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria for an operation.

He was admitted this morning, according to his spokesperson Joe Maila, but he could not give a reason, citing doctor-patient confidentiality.

Motsoaledi is the second Cabinet minister to be admitted to a public hospital recently. Transport Minister Dipuo Peters was admitted and treated at Steve Biko Academic Hospital last week, when she underwent a surgical procedure.

The Steve Biko Academic hospital was ranked as the best-performing state hospital in Gauteng during the 2011 national health facilities audit. It scored 81% when on the overall delivery of quality healthcare.

This might explain why ministers do not think twice about using the facility. It also has some of the best paediatricians, vascular and plastic and reconstructive surgeons in the country, according to the University of Pretoria, which is attached to it.

Meanwhile, Deputy Health Minister Gwen Ramokgopa has wished Motsoaledi a speedy recovery.

“All of us wish you well, minister, and a speedy recovery. It is our wish that you recover soon,” she said.
