Absa Premiership promotion race heats up

2014-05-21 10:31

The race for promotion to the Absa Premiership hots up when Polokwane City face Black Leopards tonight.

City host the Limpopo derby at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in a game where they will be chasing maximum points to enhance their chances of retaining their Premiership status.

Victory for coach Boebie Solomons’ team will send them to the top of the mini league table with four points.

This after they picked up a point against Milano United in the opening match in Cape Town last week.

However, things won’t be easy tonight after City’s build-up was rocked by a spate of injuries to key players like experienced striker Esau Kanyenda.

Rise and Shine, as City are known to their followers, finished 15th in the Premiership and were relegated to the promotion playoffs.

Meanwhile, Leopards will go into the game on the back of a win over Milano on Sunday, a victory that placed them at the top of the log with three fixtures to spare.

The odds favour coach Kosta Papic’s side to win the clash as playing at the Polokwane venue is as good as having a home advantage.

Lidoda Duvha have played the most attractive football in the National First Division despite letting the league title slip from their grasp in the closing stages of the season.

Their impressive run depends on players like midfielder Edgar Manaka and the experience of goalkeeper Jacob Mokhasi.

While each of the three sides in the hunt for promotion still have equal chances of going through, tonight’s fixture will give the race a new dimension.

The team with the most points will gain promotion to the Premiership after each side has completed four matches on a home and away basis.

»?Tonight’s game kicks off at 7.30pm and will be broadcast live on SABC and SS4
