Absa opens disaster fund

2010-10-14 11:17

Absa AgriBusiness has opened a disaster relief fund for damage caused during recent wild fires and to help drought-stricken provinces.

Absa AgriBusiness general manager Ernst Janovsky said: “Veld fires all over the country were particularly devastating over the past two weeks, destroying grazing of more than 520 000 hectares.

“Fires were reported in the Free State, North West, Limpopo and Northern Cape while the Eastern and Western Cape as well as KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape have been stricken by droughts.”

The fires have been fanned by hot and windy conditions. As a result, farmers will need to invest large sums of money to buy feed for their cattle.

“Farmers with extra or surplus feed who want to contribute can contact the different organised agricultural structures in the different provinces that were hit by the fires or drought.”

Donations will be distributed to organised structures in Agri Limpopo, Agri North-West, Agri Free State, Agri Northern Cape, Agri Eastern Cape and Agri KwaZulu-Natal, said Janovsky.

The Absa AgriBusiness Disaster Relief Fund 2010 savings account number is 9252412925 and branch code is 63205.
