Actors strut stuff for Mzansi’s first telenovella

Glittering night marks veteran playwright John Kani’s TV series

It’s not often I find myself in the same space as respected thespians like John Kani, Nakedi Ribane, Magic Hlatshwayo, Ilse Klink and Ernest Ndlovu.

So it was quite exciting when Mzansi Magic threw a party at the Urban Brew studios in Randburg to launch Inkaba, a new telenovela directed by Kani.

As the MC of the night, Kaya FM’s Thabo Mokwele explained, a telenovela is different from a soapie in that it has a beginning, a middle, a climax and an ending.

Inkaba will end on its 208th episode.

He proceeded to introduce the cast in fashion show style by having them strut their stuff down a ramp, much to the guests’ delight.

Former model and co-owner of modelling agency, Ribane, was natural as she sashayed down the ramp.

One of the leads is former Generations star Dumisane Mbebe, who took over a role from Muzi Clive Ngwenya, who died earlier this year.

Award-winning actress Portia Gumede is one of the script writers. Kani credited her with the casting and extolled her, calling her “an actor’s casting agent and a actor’s director”.

After watching the teaser and an episode, it’s clear that we’re going to get a generous dose of some soapie elements like lust, revenge, betrayal, family rivalries and star-crossed love.

The rest of the event saw Kani hold court with fans while the other actors mingled. Spotted designers Paledi Segapo of Palse Homme and Hangwani Nengovhela who said they were getting ready for the upcoming SA Fashion Week.

Speaking of clothes, DJ Black Coffee’s wife Mbali Maphumulo must have been the best dressed there in a tiny white dress.

Hard to believe she also had a baby not too long ago. Whatever she and Lee-Ann Liebenberg are on, I want some.

As expected, the event was over at a decent hour and it was nice to get home early.
