Afcon could be in disarray

Berlin – The forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) could be thrown into disarray after Namibia approached the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to have Burkina Faso kicked out of the competition.

Lawyer for the Namibian Football Association (NFA) Reinhard Stuenkel today confirmed to dpa that his office had faxed the documents to CAS late yesterday and sent them by registered mail.

Namibia lost two Afcon qualifiers against Burkina Faso, but put in a protest about the eligibility of one of the Burkina Faso players, Cameroon-born Herve Zengue.

Zengue played in both matches against Namibia and should the games be awarded to Namibia as a result, the southern African country would take the place of Burkina Faso at the January 21 to February 12 finals, which will be co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

Africa’s controlling body CAF dismissed Namibia’s protest on the grounds that the protest had not been signed by the captain’s of both teams and the CAF appeal board later upheld the decision.
