AfriForum condemns Winnie apology decision

2011-01-12 14:53

AfriForum has condemned a decision by Gauteng Police Commissioner General Mzwandile Petros to apologise to ANC MP Winnie Madikizela-Mandela for stopping the car she was in for speeding.

Spokesperson Nantes Kelder said today the decision was not good for police morale.

“This action sends a very negative message to all members and henceforth they will hesitate to take action out of fear for victimisation.”

Kelder said Madikizela-Mandela was not above the law.

It was unacceptable that police members who had done their best for the police for years had to be bullied into apologising.

Beeld newspaper reported that Petros would accompany officers who stopped a car carrying Madikizela-Mandela on December 30 for going 150km/h, to present her with an apology.

The officers claimed they were verbally and physically abused by the ex-wife of former president Nelson Mandela and her bodyguards.
