AfriForum to lay criminal charges against Malema

2011-10-20 13:09

AfriForum will lay a criminal charge against ANC Youth League president Julius Malema for reportedly encouraging people to take land without permission.

AfriForum said today that its action was prompted by a report in the Beeld newspaper that quoted Malema as saying: “If they don’t want to give the land over to us, we must take it without their permission.”

AfriForum said: “According to a legal opinion ... this behaviour of Malema in itself constitutes the criminal offence of incitement to sedition, for which he can be criminally prosecuted.”

Malema reportedly made the remark yesterday while addressing residents in Thembelihle, south of Johannesburg, about the youth league’s planned marches for “economic freedom”.

Youth league spokesman Floyd Shivambu declined to comment on AfriForum’s plans.

The civil rights body said it would lay the charges at the Wierdabrug police station in Centurion at 3pm today.
