African Village will be an economic and cultural hub

Tourists will be able to experience various cultures from the

continent at the African Village in Kensington, Johannesburg.

The cultural and economic hub is built in Rhodes Park, where

cultural, artistic and folk assets of 53 African countries are on show.

The business centre at Eskom Convention Centre is the hot spot for

business meetings and expos.

The place hosts about 10 000 international visitors and 35 000

locals, including 100 VVIPs and 400 VIPs comprising different heads of


There are art, craft and tourism emporiums, a food court hosting

restaurants from all over the continent, a fashion and design zone, book and

banking zones, and a multimedia centre.

Best of all, the concert hall will have more than 100 African

artists performing daily.

The artists include Ivory Coast’s Alpha Blondy; South

Africa’s Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Malaika, Hugh Masekela and Ringo; Senegal’s Ismael

Lo; Cape Verde’s Cesaria Evora; and Congolese soukous star Papa Wemba.

The African Village will be open between 10am and 2am daily until

July 12.
