Africans try to enforce taxes for multinationals

2011-07-05 12:54

Tax authorities say three African countries are now working together to prevent multinational companies from avoiding taxes and depriving their countries of money that could be used to fight poverty.

The African Tax Administration Forum said this week that South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia plan to exchange information about taxpayers. The effort is aimed at monitoring whether corporations are paying enough tax.

Aid groups and governments are expressing growing concern over whether poor countries in Africa are getting a fair share of taxes from rich companies that operate there.

A report by ActionAid last year prompted tax experts in the three countries to meet and agree to work toward a tax information exchange agreement.
