Everybody loves everybody!

That’s the rallying cry of a lime-green-faced pixie in a white Alice in Wonderland frock.

Her hair is made of green marbles that catch the late afternoon desert sun in the Tankwa Karoo.

The pixie herds all manner of fantastic creatures into place – Captain America, spacemen, stewardesses, pirates, army marshals, naked Nubians and bushmen, hot dogs and, every now and then, an ordinary human in jeans and a T-shirt.

One by one they sit down.

A voice from a sound system blares: “We are ubuntu, we are going to make an image of Mandela!”
A plane roars from the adjoining makeshift airfield and flies low over the gathered thousands to take a picture as they use their bodies to spell out the word ubuntu and make a picture of the elderly statesman.

“It’s going to be beautiful,” shouts the disembodied voice from the sound system.

On cue, in celebration of their loving feat, the creatures shout and simultaneously run into the desert, drums burning a furious rhythm into the air.

The trippy hippy people have been unleashed into the nonstop party zone that is the AfrikaBurn festival.

It is indeed the advertised temporary city of art.
