Ailing singer not on Makeba concert bill

2010-05-21 10:48

The organisers of the Tribute to (Miriam) Makeba concert have confirmed

that Busi Mhlongo’s name has been removed from the list of performers for

tomorrow’s show.

Mhlongo’s spokesperson, Neil Comfort, said it had come to his

attention "that there is advertising being flighted via various media outlets” according to which Mhlongo was billed for the show.

Comfort said Mhlongo, a virtuoso singer, dancer and composer, could

not make it because “she continues her long and brave fight with cancer” and

that the adverts might mislead her fans into thinking that she will be

performing. He wants organisers of the show to make it clear that

Mhlongo won’t be at the Makeba concert.

Morris Roda of Roda Productions, the organisers of the show, said they

had withdrawn the adverts after learning about Mhlongo’s ill-health.

“We took her out of the show when we learnt about her state of

health and we also withdrew the ads,” said Roda.

He said that the advert placed in the Sowetan newspaper today did

not include Mhlongo’s name, adding that fellow artists would pray for the ailing

singer tomorrow at the concert.

The show, which takes place at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in

Newtown, Johannesburg, from 10am, will feature Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mory

Kante, Makeba’s Band, Nhlanhla Nciza, Camagwini, Dorothy Masuku, Tshepo Tshola,

Malaika, The Soul Brothers, Siphokazi, Lucky Dube’s Band, Ntando, Rebecca Malope

and Abigail Kubeka.
