Airlink re-routes flights and refunds passangers

SA Airlink is continuing to re-route flights and refund passengers

following last week’s grounding of 14 of its aircraft due to safety


The South African Civil Aviation Authority grounded Airlink’s fleet

of 14 Jetstream aircraft last Wednesday.

“It’s business as usual, with accommodating re-routing where we

can,” said Airlink spokesperson Karin Murray today.

“We are in contact with passengers. If they have opted for refunds

and want to make their own travel arrangements, we are assisting with


The Jetstream aircraft’s airworthiness status was retracted

following a series of accidents and near-accidents over the past few months. A

problem with an engine component of the craft was subsequently identified.

At the time Airlink said the maintenance of the aircraft’s engine

was the manufacturer’s responsibility.

The plane manufacturer, BAE Systems, said

it was confident its plane and the Honeywell-manufactured engine would meet

international safety standards.

Murray said talks between the airline and BAE Systems about the

plane’s engine problems would resume today and the process of rectifying the

technical problems would resume after the Christmas break.

The other aircraft types operated by SA Airlink – the BAE 146 and

Embraer 135 – continue to operate.
