Airport evacuated in bomb scare

The Bloemfontein airport was evacuated at the weekend after a sportsbag containing women’s underwear was identified as a possible bomb, Beeld reported today.

The “suspicious” bag was spotted in the airport building yesterday, airport manager Johan Scholtz said.

“Nobody claimed the bag. We evacuated the building and called the dog unit. A sniffer dog was brought in and immediately lay down next to the bag, which means that it could contain explosives,” he was quoted as saying.

However, upon closer inspection the bag was found to contain only women’s underwear.

“We also initially laughed about it, but for the dog to lie down next to the bag means that there must have been something like ammunition or a firearm in that bag at some stage,” he said.

The Stormers rugby team was on their way home when it happened, and waited in the plane.

Team manager Chippy Solomons said they were not delayed for too long.

“That was a different kind of bomb, for sure,” he added.
