Ajax / Bucs crunch clash to decide league title destiny

2011-03-16 09:39

Tonight’s Absa Premiership clash between Ajax Cape Town and Orlando Pirates will provide an insight into where this season’s championship will be heading.

Pirates, who have gone 16 games unbeaten since November, are currently on top of the log – just a point above their hosts at Newlands and a victory for the Buccaneers will open a four points margin at the summit.

However, Ajax are expected to give Pirates the ultimate test, especially with the expected capacity crowd mainly from opposition teams – Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns – who will be rooting for them.

A win for Ajax will open the league race and give Sundowns and Chiefs, who are lying third and fourth respectively, a chance to challenge for the honours.

While Pirates have not tasted defeat on the road this season, Ajax’s sole defeat in front of their supporters came at the hands of Sundowns.

A midfield battle between two enterprising youngsters, Thulani Serero and Andile Jali, is expected to take centre stage.

Serero has been Ajax’s live-wire this season, not only creating goals but also registering his name on the score-sheet while Jali has made his presence felt in the middle of the park.

But in Thembinkosi Fanteni, Ajax have a capable striker who can break the Ghosts’ hearts as he has a point to prove against his former side.
