Ajax Under-19s through to Premier Cup semis

2011-04-24 17:00

The success of Absa Premiership chasing Ajax Cape Town this season has certainly inspired the Urban Warriors’ youth team.

Ajax Under-19 today qualified for the semifinals of the Metropolitan Premier Cup, the popular youth tournament that runs in the Mother City every Easter weekend.

Ajax has won the competition four times between 2001 and 2008.

And now under coach Noel Cousins – the legendary erstwhile Moroka Swallows striker – they saw off the defending champions SuperSport United 4-3 on penalties in the Last 16 last night and put one over 2008 finalists Bloemfontein Celtic today, en route to the semifinals.

They will face ASD Cape Town at the Bayhill grounds in Belhar tomorrow.

In another, semifinal, Stars of Africa Academy will carry the flag for Gauteng when they meet Komesho from Namibia.

The south western nation is among the foreign contingent that has been invited to the tournament this year.

Other visitors are Dipetsana from Botswana, Young Warriors from Zimbabwe, Bahlabani from Lesotho and South Nottingham College from England.

The Premier Cup, formerly known as the Bayhill Tournament, started in 1989.

In its 23 years, it saw players participate who later went on to international stardom like Steven Pienaar, Bongani Khumalo (who are both at Tottenham Hotspur), Daylon Claasen, Siboniso Gaxa and Lance Davids (who are all at Lierse SK in Belgium).
