Hours after coach Muhsin Ertugral handed his resignation letter to Ajax Cape Town management, the applications started rolling in, says the club.

Ajax director Ari Efstathiou said at a press conference today that they had received numerous job applications from local and foreign coaches.

He refused to divulge the names, but said they hoped to find their coach in the next two or three weeks.

Ertugral quit Ajax this morning citing personal reasons for his departure. Ian Taylor, who was his former assistant, will take over as the interim manager until the new coach is hired.

Efstathiou said: “We have to do everything in consultation with our mother team and that means we can even get a Dutch coach. We need someone who understands the team’s culture because, to us, it is a case of continuity.”

It is believed the former Kaizer Chiefs mentor was unhappy that the team was continuously selling its most prized assets, but still wanted him to do well.

Ajax have just sold Lebogang Manyama to SuperSport United, Thulani Hlatshwayo has signed a pre-contract with Bidvest Wits, while Thato Mokeke has done the same with SuperSport.

But Efstathiou said the two would only be leaving at the end of the season.

“Except for Lebogang, who else have we lost?” asked Efstathiou.

“All the coaches want top players and we are no different.

“Muhsin has done well for us and it is unfortunate that this has come, we could not stand in his way as his family comes first. We are sad to lose him because we believed he was the man to take us to where we wanted to be,” said Efstathiou.

Ajax visit Orlando Pirates in a league game on Monday.
