Alcohol theft cops to appear in court

2011-01-21 08:46

The eight Gauteng metro police officers allegedly caught stealing alcohol which had fallen off a truck will appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrates Court today, North West police said.

The officers, aged between 25 and 39, were arrested yesterday when a senior SAPS officer found them allegedly loading “volumes” of liquor that had fallen off an SAB truck into their official vehicles on the N12 outside Potchefstroom, spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lesego Metsi.

The beer was valued at about R60 000.

According to the truck driver the tarpaulin covering the trailer was blown off in transit and pallets of alcohol fell onto the road. The driver called the metro police after other motorists indicated to him he was losing part of his load.

Instead of stopping other motorists from stealing the beer, the metro police officers allegedly helped themselves.
