Alex Boraine: Cyril Ramaphosa is a ‘more acceptable’ face of the ANC

2014-03-14 15:16

Author Alex Boraine said there should be a debate around President Jacob Zuma’s successor, because Zuma himself might not last through his second term.

Speaking about his book What’s Gone Wrong? at the Gordon Institute of Business Science in Joburg last night, Boraine, a former politician, speculated that Zuma might be ousted before 2019, perhaps because of legal troubles.

“In my book, I argue that Cyril Ramaphosa, who is ANC deputy president and soon to be the country’s deputy president, will be a more acceptable face of the ANC,” he said.

Boraine said Ramaphosa was one of the architects of the Constitution and he played a leading role in the negotiations during the transition to democracy.

“When he becomes president, will he turn the ship of state?” Boraine asked. “Can the ANC be reformed from within, which is what Ramaphosa must do?”

Boraine was, among other things, referring to corruption, which he said was rampant in South Africa.

He said Ramaphosa alone might not be able to turn things around, but a coalition of forces consisting of academics, lawyers, religious leaders and others outside and also in politics, could do so.

He said things in South Africa were likely to get worse in the next 20 years, not better.

The past 20 years was enough time for the government to do well if it really aimed high enough, he said.
