All children need to be accounted for, says Graça

All children need to be accounted for at every moment of every day, former president Nelson Mandela’s wife Graça Machel said today.

“It takes a little money and more time to make sure we give children a safe environment,” she said at the release of a report on children’s rights.

“People need to be more conscious 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week to make sure children are not vulnerable or at risk.”

Protecting children had to become a part of people’s everyday lives.

The government had legislature to help protect children, but it was more important that children got that protection in their homes and communities, Machel said.

The report on the Champion for Children Campaign, which was launched in December 2009, was released by the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund today.

The campaigned was aimed at galvanising South Africans to protect children during the Fifa 2010 World Cup.

Machel said the campaign was launched at a time when there were serious fears that the World Cup would put children more at risk of abuse and trafficking.

She said the campaign was a success.

“It touched rural areas, urban areas, schools and places that were usually high risk. The levels of abuse and especially trafficking dropped.”

Machel said the campaign needed to be broadened and made into a movement.

“We need to mobilise more people,” she said.
