All match officials set for any mishap

In a rare occurrence, assistant referee Zakhele Siwela had to step into the middle after referee Faik Daniel suffered a hamstring injury this week.

This was during a match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows at Mbombela Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Daniel couldn’t continue, with about 30 minutes left, and the Alexandra-born assistant Siwela had to swap a flag for a whistle.

Sundowns went on to win the category-A match 2-0.

The SA Football Association’s head of referees, Adeel Carelse, was quite chuffed when he related this to City Press, saying the smooth transition was something to be proud of.

Carelse said his department had prepared all match officials for any eventuality and was not surprised that Siwela handled the situation professionally.

He said: “This is what we’ve been preaching all this time; that our officials can handle every situation. Imagine if we didn’t have anyone who could handle the situation, it would have been an embarrassment.

“I am happy that our officials are up there among the best in the world. We are now working on minimising our mistakes and it is a challenge that we think we will overcome eventually.”

In the same breath, Carelse said he was happy with referee Daniel Bennett’s appointment to the African Nations Championships in Sudan.

He left last Sunday, a day after officiating in a match between Maritzburg United and Kaizer Chiefs. In December Bennett was at the Fifa Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

Carelse said the continuous appointment of South African referees to international events was a further stamp of approval from Fifa and Caf.

He said: “We have just hosted a successful women referees’ workshop in Durban. Fifa has also increased the number of our officials on the international panel and this augurs well.”

SA has 16 officials on the Fifa panel – 14 men and two women.
