Alleged cop killers arrested

Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a police officer in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.

“They were arrested today and they are expected to appear in the Ladysmith Magistrates’ Court soon,” said Captain Thulani Zwane.

The state alleges that the two men killed Sergeant Siboniso Siyethemba Nkabinde (32) while he was off duty on Sunday evening.

Zwane said Nkabinde was with his friend when the incident happened.

“He was requested to accompany a friend to Driefontein, Ladysmith. Once they were returning home, the vehicle ran out of fuel near the N11 along the Driefontein Road,” he said.

The alleged killers had offered to take Nkabinde’s friend to a garage to buy fuel.

“Once the group had returned with the fuel, the two men demanded money from the policeman and his friend,” he said.

Nkabinde was shot when the two men heard that they did not have money, Zwane said.

“His friend managed to flee into the veld and was unharmed. The suspects then fled taking the policeman’s cellphone with them.”
