Alleged robber killed in chase

A suspected robber was killed and four other people were injured when a high speed chase ended in a collision in Randburg.

Gauteng police lieutenant colonel Lungelo Dlamini said today three men had robbed two Malawians of their luggage in Randburg and sped off in a Toyota Corolla. Security guards followed them and a high-speed chase ensued.

“The suspects’ vehicle made a U-turn on Jan Smuts Avenue and faced on-coming traffic. It was then involved in a serious collision with a [Toyota] Fortuna,” said Dlamini.

One of the alleged robbers was killed in the crash. A woman and her daughter were seriously injured in the crash and were taken to hospital for further medical care. Police recovered a firearm from the men’s car as well as the stolen goods.

Police were investigating whether the Malawians had been followed from the OR Tambo International Airport where they had just landed, or were only targeted outside the house in Bordeaux.
