Alleged serial rapist re-arrested

An alleged serial rapist who escaped from a Pretoria prison a month ago, has been re-arrested, Gauteng police have said.
An off-duty Hawks member attached to the case spotted the smartly-dressed Ismael Simelane (27), in central Pretoria and overpowered him when he tried to run away shortly after 5pm yesterday, Captain Paul Ramaloko said.
He and an alleged accomplice had been arrested on March 21 after a series of rapes and kidnappings, with similar modus operandi were committed in the Hammanskraal and Mamelodi East areas.
The pair appeared before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court early in June, were the accomplice was released on bail.
Simelane, who was out on parole after serving three months of a six-month sentence for theft, was locked up again, in a “isolated secured” cell in Baviaanspoort prison, from which he escaped. There were no signs of a “forceful exit” and the escape was still under investigation.
