Amajita, Shakes Mashaba unfazed by luggage lost en route to Yaoundé

The national under-20 soccer team conducted one of their final training sessions ahead of their 2015 African Youth Championship qualifier in Cameroon without a kit.

“It is a very bad situation because most of our luggage did not make it to Yaoundé. Our clothes, training equipment such as cones, and medication are all held up in Nairobi,” said team manager Ace Kika earlier today.

The team was left in limbo after arriving in Cameroon to news that Air Kenya had failed to load most of their bags on the plane.

Safa media officer Matlhomola Morake said the missing luggage would be delivered to the squad tomorrow.

This is a cause for concern as the team is set to play against Cameroon tomorrow at 4pm South African time.

Morake was confident that the missing luggage would not hamper the team’s performance.

“The team had a full training session. They are mentally strong and are ready,” he said.

Head coach Shakes Mashaba’s training kit was among the luggage that was left behind.

“If only people would see me at the training session later today ... I will be wearing my formal clothes that I travelled in from South Africa as there is nothing to change into,” he said.

Mashaba urged the team’s supporters not to worry.

“These things happen. As the manager was saying when we got the news about our bags I looked at my boys and found that they were not too worried,” he said.

To compensate for the delay, Kenya Airways gave the team money so that they could buy toiletries while waiting for their luggage.
