Ambulance waiting at Mandela entrance

2011-01-28 10:28

An ambulance has pulled into the entrance specially designated for former president Nelson Mandela at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg today.

The ambulance reversed in an hour before Acting President Kgalema Motlanthe was due to address media at 12.30pm on Mandela’s condition, who has been in hospital since Wednesday.

Officials from the presidency and government communications looked on as two metro police vehicles and a Saps vehicle flanked the sealed-off entrance.

Hospital officials and Nelson Mandela Foundation representatives were also expected at the briefing.

Government spokespersons Thabo Masebe and Themba Maseko were seen leaving the cordoned off area, as were Mandela’s aide Zelda la Grange and his daughter Zindzi.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu was among those present, wearing a T-shirt with a picture of Mandela on its back.

Patients being discharged from the hospital had to make their way through red tape and scores of journalists waiting at the hospital’s main door.

Journalists waiting outside the room where the briefing would take place had to leave their bags for sniffer dogs to check.
They were asked not to do anything to agitate the dogs.
