Amplats disciplines strikers while Implats agrees to pay hikes

2012-09-27 14:53

Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) has started disciplinary procedures against workers who are on an unprotected strike today while Impala Platinum (Implats) has agreed to “pay adjustments”.

Said Amplats CEO Chris Griffith in a statement: “We have been left with no choice but to initiate disciplinary action, which could lead to dismissals.”

Workers at Amplats’ Rustenburg operations went on a wildcat strike two weeks ago, demanding a R16 000 salary before deductions.

Griffith earlier warned that disciplinary procedures would start today for workers who did not return to work.

About 21 000 workers out of a workforce of 58 000 were on strike.

Meanwhile World No 2 platinum producer Implats said today it was giving workers a “pay adjustment” and details would follow, against the backdrop of the wave of illegal strikes sweeping South Africa’s mining sector.

“Yes we have, that’s correct,” Implats spokesperson Bob Gilmour told Reuters when asked if a pay adjustment had been made.

He said he could not provide details because the company “was in a process of doing that”.

A union organiser at Implats said the offer was for across-the-board increases and that workers seemed happy with the offer.
