WesBank/SA Guild of Motoring Journalists announces the finalists for Car of the Year. Janine-Lee Gordon reports

There’s glitz, glamour and shot nerves in the run-up to the WesBank/SA Guild of Motoring Journalists Car of the Year competition.

The 12 finalists have been announced for 2013 and we won’t know the winner until March.

WesBank’s marketing manager, Chris de Kock, says: “The 12 finalists play a big role in influencing the consumer’s decision when buying a car.

“When a car is chosen as a Car of the Year finalist, it carries a lot more weight because it represents the full package motorists are looking for.”

The cars were chosen by a 29-member jury that is selected by peers in the motoring guild.

The jury votes for their top 12 out of 27 semifinalists.

The testing is a painstaking and meticulous process. The cars are put through their paces in extreme conditions during a two-day session in February at Gerotek Test Facilities, west of Pretoria.

The routes are designed to test the vehicles in a similar way the average driver would use them.

The test days allow the jury to reacquaint themselves with the cars in terms of aesthetics, build quality, ergonomics, fuel consumption, environmental friendliness, safety features and value for money.

These are all the aspects the cars will be judged on.

Car of the Year competitions are held around the world.

While some countries simply cast votes on paper, South Africa is the only country with a vigorous system.

The winner is determined only after three rounds of voting, and the points are tallied and audited.

During the next few weeks, we’ll focus on each of the finalists.
