Angry residents block opening of new Durban mall

The official opening of eThekwini Municipality’s flagship project,

the Bridge City Shopping Centre, was disrupted this morning when some 2000

people blocked the entrance, police said.

“We have more than 2000 people here. They claim that local people

have not been employed to work in this centre,” said Constable Mumsy


“There is chaos but we are monitoring the situation.”

The centre is situated near Inanda Township outside Durban and it

forms part of a major new precinct which will include residential apartments,

government and commercial offices, a 400-bed provincial hospital and a regional


Construction has already started on the R700 million Dr Pixley Ka

Seme Hospital and the court. The projects are expected to be completed in 2011.
