Another fire at Kya Sands

2014-10-11 09:52

A second fire at Kya Sands was unrelated to the fire in an informal settlement there during the week, Johannesburg emergency services said.

“There was another fire, at Cashbuild next to Kya Sands informal settlement,” spokesperson Nana Radebe said yesterday.

About 2000 people were displaced when a fire broke out in the informal settlement on Thursday.

Radebe said the fire at Cashbuild, which started before 6pm, had been extinguished and that no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was not known and would be investigated.

People had donated clothes, food and blankets to those affected by Thursday’s fire, she said.

“We are very grateful to one woman, who came by and took the lady that had a two-week-old child and took two pregnant woman to her house.”
