Another four soccer players die in accident

2010-09-22 15:10

Four amateur soccer players were killed in a car accident on the same day a funeral was held for six other players who died the same way, the SA Football Association (Safa) said today.

The four who died on Saturday – Manfred Hendrick Ninive, Paseka William Pule, Sydney Galawe and Jomo Khathi – were all members of Cosmos Football Club, playing in the SAB Regional League of the Safa Motheo Region in the Free State.

They were on their way to Smithfield to complete their pre-season preparations.

Safa president Kirsten Nematandani was “distraught upon hearing the news“, the federation said in a statement.

“On behalf of Safa, we would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the families of the bereaved,” Nematandani said.

He added that it was the “duty and responsibility” of the clubs to ensure the safety of the players.

“At this point we would like to advise all clubs to use roadworthy vehicles, not to travel too fast, to leave on time or make other arrangements when playing too far away, to avoid overloading and to use safer transport,” Nematandani said.

A joint funeral service will be held for the four players on Saturday at the Hoogte Sports Ground in Qibing, Free State.

Four of the nine players who were initially admitted to hospital after the accident have been released.

According to medical staff, the remaining five are showing signs of improvement.
