Another mentally disabled Soweto teen ‘failed by justice system’

2012-04-25 10:49

Details of another mentally challenged Soweto teenage rape victim failed by the justice system have emerged and Gauteng police have promised to assist her and her family.

A man allegedly tried to rape the 13-year-old girl from Braamfischerville, Soweto, two years ago. There was no penetration, according to her mother.

“There was a case at the Protea Magistrates Court but the rapist was released,” said her mother, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her daughter.

The teenager attends a school for the mentally disabled in Soweto.

The woman revealed her daughter’s plight during Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa’s visit yesterday to the Braamfischerville home of the 17-year-old mentally disabled gang rape victim whose ordeal was recorded by her assailants last month.

The woman and her daughter live close to the 17-year-old’s family.

Eight suspects, including four minors, were arrested last week and face multiple charges for the rape of the 17-year-old.

The 13-year-old girl’s mother said communities mistreated disabled children.

Senior Gauteng police officers promised to assist the girl and her mother. A senior provincial officer also gave the woman his number.
