Another plane down in KZN

2012-05-05 07:44

Two people have died in a light plane crash near Greytown in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The Witness newspaper in Pietermaritzburg reported that a man and a woman en route from Piet Retief in Mpumalanga to Cape Town were killed when their Cessna 206 crashed in a field yesterday evening.

The crash site was about 3km from Greytown in the direction of KwaDukuza (Stanger).

Phindiwe Gwebu of the Civil Aviation Authority was quoted by the newspaper as saying that only two people were on board the plane. She said a CAA investigator from Gauteng would fly to the area on Saturday.

The plane crash is the third in KwaZulu-Natal in one week. Yesterday afternoon a plane crash-landed near Virginia airport in Durban, but the pilot and his passenger escaped injury.

Apparently the pilot realised there was something wrong with the engine shortly after takeoff.

The pilot of a light aircraft that crashed at Margate airport a week ago died yesterday. His female passenger died in the accident.
