Anxious matriculants told to contact Childline

2011-01-05 07:09

Matriculants or their parents have been advised to contact Childline if there are any concerns over a matriculant’s emotional reaction to their exam results, which are to be released tomorrow.

In a statement released yesterday, education spokesperson Granville Whittle said: “The department recognises that this is an anxious time for many learners and their parents as they await the results.”

“The release of the results has over the years been an emotional and often stressful time for many learners, and in a few isolated cases, has resulted in extreme reactions and tragic outcomes that could have been avoided.”

Whittle said the department was encouraging all pupils who had written the examinations to go to their schools where principals and senior teachers would be on hand to discuss their results.

“Learners and their parents and caregivers are urged to contact Childline if they are at all concerned with their own emotional reactions or in the case of parents, those of their children,” he said.

“Childline has trained counsellors available to counsel those in distress.”

The toll-free number for Childline is 08000?55555 or for 24-hour assistance.

The matric results will be available online at and in the print and electronic media.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will hold a media briefing at the Union Buildings in Pretoria early tomorrow morning where she will officially announce the results.?
