App of the week: Flipboard

2013-12-01 14:00

When this newfangled app first appeared, it promised to give a magazine-like experience to the iPad. Quite quickly, it became the poster child for how to read on a tablet.

It’s such a beautifully simple idea, you always wonder why you never came up with it yourself.

In essence, what it allows you to do is set up your favourite websites or Twitter feeds (or RSS, if you still use them) so that you can literally “flip” through the heads and then the stories when you click into them.

The interface is that simple – and so intuitive. To read the articles, once they have loaded, you just “flip” your way through the stories, using an upward gesture with your thumb on the smartphone version, which is arguably even better than the tablet version.

Flipboard’s flip gestures are also replicated if swiped backwards when moving back – a gesture that has since found its way into other apps and operating systems (Windows Phone?8 and BlackBerry?10 both use sideways swipes very effectively).

You can also add Facebook and Twitter to your feeds – although I find news sources much more useful, especially ones like AllThingsD, which has customised its news feeds to fit the Flipboard format.

Obviously, sharing articles from Flipboard is equally easy.
