App of the week: Strava is the new fitness buzz

Strava is an unexpected hit of an app. It lets active people log their runs and bicycle rides.

Anyone can upload their data, for publically available routes, so it gives anyone the opportunity to compete. Amateurs can compete against professionals.

The controversial Lance Armstrong has become a fallen hero – so much so that it has provoked fierce debate about whether Armstrong should be banned from Strava.

Meanwhile, a mystery cyclist – the “Banksy” of Strava, as he or she is being called – has been setting new records around London, fuelling speculation about who he or she might be, including that it might be Tyler Hamilton, Armstrong’s former team-mate, whose tell-all book broke the story of the sport’s rampant drug abuse.

Just like real cycling, there are King of the Mountains titles for different routes and peaks, and anyone can claim them for beating the time.

This is also controversial, as several cyclists (and unwitting pedestrians) have died in such pursuits.

Who knew an app that isn’t Instagram or SnapChat could create such excitement?
